BLOG – Lots of different things.
I feel a bit like Santa at the moment, I’ve written my list, I’ve checked it twice…
Basically I have done all our Christmas shopping in Lockdown 2.0 and wrapped all the presents so now we are able to explore a little more freely, I have decided to write a blog on lots of different walks that can be done in and around Whitby and North Yorkshire.
Whitby businesses are at the moment, waiting for an announcement from the government this week – Thursday December 16th. Whitby and North Yorkshire are currently in Tier 2 but as everywhere around us in Tier 3, this has had a massive impact on our business and also those small independent shops, pubs, restaurants in our town. We are so hoping for a bit of respite so that from December 27thwhen we re-open for the New Year week, we will all be busy but that does depend on how many areas are reduced from Tier 3 to Tier 2.
So walks in and around Whitby (it is really muddy at the moment on any of these so definitely need to be prepared with correct footwear and clothes etc):-

- Whitby-Runswick Bay, this is a lovely 5.8 mile walk one way. We have done this several times and it is my favourite. There is an amazing cake shop at the top of Runswick Bay where the bus drops off (X4 or 4, runs every ½ hour from our B&B – 15 min trip up the coast). Then a walk down to Runswick Bay and along the beach to pick up the Cleveland Way. We always do it this way round, so then after 2.5 hours or so, we arrive in Sandsend. Harts Inn is a favourite for lunch. As we are in Tier 2 you have to order a substantial meal if you want an alcoholic drink.
- Whitby – Sandsend – This is a 3 mile stroll to and from Whitby, (6 miles in total) dependent on tide times – either by the beach or road. Tides is open at the weekends for pizzas for lunch at the moment, along with Sandsend café plus a new business called the fish cottage is opening in 2021 (just by the bridge).
- Whitby – Robins Hood Bay – in not very technical terms, this is very ‘up’ and ‘down’ so although still only around 6 miles, it will take you around 3.5 hours. You can pick the Cleveland Way up, from the top of the Abbey steps then this follows the coastal line around. Again there are a few pubs and restaurants open in Robin Hoods Bay both at the top of the town and also at the botoom. Then bus back (x93) unless you are being really energetic then it’s a 6 miles walk back to Whitby by the same route or by the Cinder Trail (still 6 miles but less time 2.5 hours).
There are also plenty of other walks inland – Hole of Horcum – on the way to Whitby on the A169 – this is either 5 miles of 7 miles – allow 4 hours. Whitby to Grosmont – 8 miles – allow 4 hours. Robins Hoods to Ravenscar – either 7 or 11 miles.
A good reference point for walks is the North York Moors National park website – https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/visiting/enjoy-outdoors/walking/our-walks/walking-routes/ravenscar-to-robin-hoods-bay
Just a few other bits of information if you do like planning like me.

All our room prices include one car parking space and breakfast included – we will still be doing our 2 breakfast sittings to comply with the government guidelines for Covid 19.

(Please note the breakfast buffet still can’t be back into our breakfast room, possibly until 2022, this is a 2019 photo!)
Packed lunches are available from ourselves – £6pp. Includes sandwich, crisps, piece of fruit and piece of cake. Bring a flask and we can fill it up for you with a hot drink.
In and around Whitby there are pubs and cafes that are open now, plus there are ones that will be opening up on December 19th– I will share as much as I can on our facebook page – definitely need to book a restaurant for dinner as capacity is reduced.
This fantastic map that I ordered arrived today and I will be getting a frame for it and placing it in our reception area, great idea by a guy called Steve Lovell at Albany design, who kindly added our B&B into his Whitby ‘tube style’ map of Whitby town and the pubs.
