Walk to Runswick Bay – May 2022

This has to be my favourite walk of this area.  Walking holidays are definitely really popular this year and of course having the Cleveland Way on our doorstep is great for us. We always catch the bus from outside our B&B, (the bus stop is on the opposite side of the road by the garage), X4 or 4 heading north up the coastline. Currently the bus runs every half hour, 4 mins and 34 mins past the hour.

A quick 10 mins and we get off in Runswick Bay, we always stop at Beech Grove bakery for one of her delicious pies or cakes to take on the walk with us.

Head down the steep road into the Bay itself, the toilets are just by the RNLI shed at the bottom near the café.

Runswick Bay is lovely and the sea was really calm on Friday and just looked perfect for a dip, I did see 2 guys in without wet suits, so that is definitely something I am going to try another day.

I think the reason I like this walk so much is the hardest bit is at the start when you are climbing the stairs up past the small waterfall, to the top of the cliff. Then it is just a great walk, along the cliff path, some dramatic scenery and gorgeous views of the coastline and sea.

Once you start getting towards Sandsend, you can see Whitby in the distance and once arriving in Sandsend you know you have done 5.8 miles walking with relative ease.

This sign did make me laugh, someone has spelt Helmsley wrong however noticed at some point and added the extra letter in.I don’t think I could walk 37 miles to Filey though a lot of people are doing this route this year.

Simon did find the stairs at the end a bit tricky, they are very steep and the hand rail is definitely needed.  It was very dry when we walked so therefore the stones weren’t slippy at all, but I think on a wet day, you would have to be extra careful.

As our route wasn’t muddy at all and the ground was very dry, it just took us under 2.5 hours to get from Runswick to Sandsend.  We did feel, as it was lunchtime, a drink in Harts Inn pub was definitely needed.  However if we hadn’t of stopped and just carried on to Whitby, we would easily have done nearly 9 miles in around 3.5 hours.

If you don’t fancy walking once you get to Sandsend, the bus stop is just outside Harts Inn and leaves at  quarter to and quarter past the hour (at the time of typing).

Enjoy your walk. Michelle
