Things to do in October in Whitby (or any winter month)
So as the days draw a bit closer and we need to hunt out, our gloves and hats, we also need to hunt out a few more outdoor things to do whilst keeping moving. Although days on the beach are not yet a distant memory (we spent hours a few weeks ago just playing in the rock pools and hunting out creatures, we can’t spend all day building sandcastles and running in and out of waves, like we used to in the hot (sometimes) summer days.

So one wet Saturday a couple of weekends ago, we decided to head out into the moors to explore the Moors National Park Centre – it is about 15 miles from Whitby and a 25 mins car journey. You need some pound coins to park in the car park but other than that the centre is free.

The Moors National Park Centre is a historic visitor centre, set in an idyllic spot on the banks of the River Esk, near Danby. From the doorstep, you can see pretty much everything that makes the North York Moors National Park so special: moorland, woodland, farmland, miles of hedges and drystone walls, historic buildings – all basking in glorious peace and quiet.
Enjoy a big breath of moorland fresh air and soak up the sweeping views. It’s an official Dark Sky Discovery Site too, one of three in the North York Moors.

So What is there to do once you get there?
There is an outdoor play area with plenty to amuse children, definitely wear wellies as it can get a bit muddy.

There is also a small walking trail, which takes you through some great wooden creatures; Eadie just loved the one she was allowed to climb on.
Then the best bit as far as my children were concerned was behind the car park; there is a bird-spotting hut along with a fairy trail all in miniature and tucked behind trees. The details of the fairy houses were amazing and we spent a pleasant hour wandering around the woods hunting them all out and listening to our children’s’ stories of who lived in them.
