At the time of writing (May 13th), Step 3 of the hospitality is still due to reopen on Monday May 17th 2021.  That is just a few days away.  We are crossing things off To Do lists and getting ready to open which is very exciting.

In the period of May 17th-June 21st, we still need to adhere to the rule of 6 or 2 households when meeting up.

As our coastal town of Whitby on the East coast of England,  begins to open it, we have tried to summarise below what we need to be aware of and what is open/what is not.

From Monday, 17 May:

page9image4232

You can meet who you like outdoors however you can’t meet in groups of over 30 people.

Restaurants, cafés and pubs will be able to serve people sitting at a table inside.

Other indoor places will also open, like cinemas, children’s play areas, hotels and bed and breakfast places plus amusement arcades.

Some larger outdoor sports and shows will be able to have people watching.

Up to 30 people will be able to go to weddings, and events to remember someone (funerals are currently being discussed).

What this means for yourselves on holiday:-

1. You can pop to the pub for a drink however you will have to order at your table (popping to the bar to order a drink still isn’t allowed)
2. Restaurants will probably have to be booked in advance to secure your table and time.  Remember that every person over 18 needs to use the governments track and trace – check in system (this applies to accommodation as well).  See below for some ideas of restaurants.
3. Social distancing and masks remain in place.
4. Whitby has an amazing beach and we don’t need to wear our masks outdoors.
5. Some things will still feel a bit different but with an amazing Uk vaccination programme, we are starting to get back to a way of life that is more enjoyable than staying in indoors all the time.

BREAKFAST

We will be serving breakfast in our lovely breakfast room and will be sticking to breakfast sittings to adhere to social distancing and taking a cautious approach.  Our breakfast menu is on our website under food and we will require you to prebook your breakfast sitting and your breakfast order via email before arrival.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes recommendations

Here are a few recommendations. Check all of them out on trip advisor and see what you think and whether the menus suit your tastes. Definitely need to book especially on a weekend and peak holiday times. Updated May 2021. Also if you follow our Facebook page, this will be the most up to date as places open and we know what their revised menus and opening times are.

* Harrys – on Pier road – good range of sea food and meat. Lovely bar also and food is excellent.  10-15 mins walk from our B&B.
* Duke of York – lovely pub on Church street, overlooking the harbour and if you can get a window table, amazing views. Food is great and reasonablepriced gin platters.10-15 mins walk from our B&B
Abbey Wharf – has a nice mezzanine area which they take reservations in. Also they have a lovely area outside which is perfect when its a sunny as they have lovely views over the Harbour. I think though they stop serving food at 8.30pm as becomes a busy pub so one to turn up early. Food menu has grown every year. Located the other side of the old bridge near Market Place. 10-15 mins walk from our B&B
* Fish and chip shops – Magpie (this is the one with the most famous reputation however only take a few bookings in advance per evening, otherwise it is a queue), Trenchers and Quayside both are typical fish and chip restaurants with great food. Also Fishermans wife – recently named in top 5 fish and chip shops in the UK, very good fish and chips plus a good selection of specials and lovely location next to sea front.1All are  7-12 mins walk from our B&B
* 2 italians on Grape Street and Church Street ( just over the old bridge) – Cosa Nostra and Moutreys. Customers that have eaten in these, have really enjoyed the food  10-12 mins walk from our B&B
* Four Seasons – Turkish restaurant with very varied menu and good food.  We have loved the starter platters the couple of times we have eaten in here. 10-12 mins walk from our B&B
* Dittos – fantastic food – only open Wed-Sat 6.30pm-9.30pm. Have to book well in advance. Very small restaurant. Fixed menu with around 4 choices for starters and desserts and around 6 choices for mains. £25 for 2 courses and £32 for 3 courses. Wine is very reasonably priced.  5-8  mins walk from our B&B
 * Endeavour boat – the restaurant in the boat has opened in late September 2018 – the restaurant a little bit later, so worth a look on the internet to see what it is like if you want a different dining experience.
Moon and Sixpence – lovely spot on the harbour. New owners this year so we haven’t had chance to try it as yet. Lovely views if you can get a window table.   Not sure when it will reopen. 10-12mins walk from our B&B.
Madamoseilles – newly opened on Skinner Street- currently got some excellent reviews and a lovely cosy feel to it. It is open during the day for light lunches and coffees, then evenings, its veering on an almost french theme with set menus for £28 for 2 courses. 5-8 mins walk from our B&B
White House – this is out of town, about 10 mins walk from our house towards Sandsend. Lovely beer garden both at the back and front of the pub. Decent food.
Bottom Horseshoe at Egton Bridge (8 miles out – 15 mins drive)- again out of town and has a lovely beer garden. Serves good food and just next to it is a small path down to the river and some great stepping stones (brilliant for children and adults).
Sandsend – Hart Inn – pub with lovely beer garden and great food. Sandsend Fish Cottage – recently opened, great fish and chips (just by bridge). 5-7 mins drive, 45 mins walk.
Rusty Shears – Lovely tea shop with a twist – they have a large gin bar. Definitely our favourite place in Whitby, coffee is delicious,  some lovely gin cocktails.  They have started opening some evenings so worth checking out their Facebook page or giving them a call.
* Falling Foss Waterfall – this is a drive out of Whitby but worth it for the lovely waterfall and walks and a lovely house serving drinks and sandwiches and cakes ( based outside so weather dependent). Nice play area for smaller children.
* Endeavour pub – lovely local pub with live music some nights around 9pm ( a little bit unusual as allows to take your own food in, bonus is there is a lovely fish and chip shop right next door). 10-15 mins walk from our B&B.
Ship Inn – on harbourside, drinks only but lovely views if you get a table in the front of the pub. 12-15mins walk from our B&B
– Arch and Abbey – Skinner Street – 5-7 mins walk from our B&B.  Mainly just drinks, lovely place to have a drink.
Hare and Hounds – Hawsker – around 10-12 mins drive – really good food – I love their steak and ale pie.  Small beer garden outside.
Egton – Horseshoe pub (at the bottom of Egton) great big beer garden.  We haven’t eaten here this year however in previous years, really good pub food.  Stepping stones are nearbye which are good fun across the small river. 10-15mins drive outside Whitby.

Just to let you know the next steps after May 17th below.
In the period of May 17th-June 21st, we still need to adhere to the rule of 6 or 2 households when meeting up.

Step 4

If all goes well, step 4 will start on Monday, 21 June.

We hope to remove all the remaining rules that are stopping people from getting together.

Nightclubs will open and large events will be able to take place.
